Can you use emotion as a test strategy?

This is Ujjwal Kumar Singh's starting point in his poignant article, “Empathy in FinTech Testing: The Human Element Behind Every Transaction.” He describes what it’s like to create testing strategies for FinTech, where everything revolves around money. He’s discovered that his greatest asset is viewing each transaction through the lens of someone trying to send or receive funds through the application. His topics touch on how Empathy makes the biggest difference:

  • During the onboarding process

  • Delivering difficult news

  • Managing the anxiety of waiting.

For me, this was a great reminder that not only should I test with the user in mind, but test with the user as a whole person who will have many experiences with the application I’m testing.

  • How do I want them to feel?

  • Am I considering the different kinds of people who will be using the application?

  • Am I considering the types of living conditions they are in?

These questions and more are addressed in this article. This type of information can be used company-wide, across Product and Design teams.

If we come together and use empathy as a team strategy, we can create applications not only to delight but also to uplift the person using them.
